A Police Constable who reportedly attempted to steal a carburetor from a seized motorcycle that was lodged at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, was granted his pre trial liberty in the sum of $50,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.
The police said that on March 18, 21-year-old Elroy Small of South Ruimveldt attempted to remove the $25,000 part from a motorcycle which was parked in the compound.
The police said that the motorcycle had been seized by police ranks and should have been in safe keeping at the CID compound.
However the constable had another idea.
The court was told that an off duty officer saw Small tampering with the motorcycle and raised an alarm.
The young Constable reportedly attempted to escape but was caught and subsequently brought before the court.
The prosecutor did not object to bail for the defendant but he did ask that the accused be placed on a substantial amount. He also indicated his intent to seek advice on the matter.
The court endorsed the request and Small will have to reappear in court on April 12, this time before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
