Tiger Bay will square off with Uitvlugt in a highly anticipated thriller moments before West Ruimveldt
oppose Stewartville in another masterpiece when the curtains go up on the Mayor’s Cup Annual Knockout Inter Ward Football tournament at the Georgetown Football Club ground from 6:30 this evening.
The team from the West End will field a strong lineup as it attempts to cart off the $500,000 put up by Banks DIH for the team that finishes first. Captain of that team, Solomon Austin will be at the helm of the defence cordon and will be supported by Shemroy Arthur in the midfield position. Arthur is also an accomplished goalkeeper and might very well be called to duty between the uprights.
Otherwise, the Tiger Bay squad would feel comforted with several other notable stars in their squad, the likes of striker, Rensford Coleridge and left wing back, Keoma Gravesande. Calvin Sheppard, who has been performing in the pro leagues in Trinidad and Tobago, will also comprise the squad thus heightening its chances of progressing to the next round.
Despite the presence of such stars, the Tiger Bay crew will have to be wary of wing back, Orville Babb as the Uitvlugt boys will be nurturing similar ambitions. Add U-17 player, Delon Lanferman and one would nurture doubts about an easy victory for the Ghetto team. This youth was instrumental in his team’s sterling performance in the just concluded tournament at the Uitvlugt Community Centre and could upset any team on his day. He will be supported by midfielders Jermain Murray and Seon Bobb plus the quintessential striker, Brian Accra.
The West Ruimveldt/Stewartville encounter would see such players as Sherman David, Dwayne Ali and Nedd Fraser battling for the former team, while the Stewartville squad will have such big names as Donald Babb in the defence cordon, forward Owen McGarrell and former national captain, Kevin Archer.
Meanwhile, Digicel has put up the second prize of $250,000, while Beepat and Sons has donated $150,000 for the team finishing in third place. The Guyana Beverage Company will take care of the $100,000 fourth prize.
Several other corporate entities have also contributed to the success of the tournament including MACORP, John Fernandes Ltd, Nazar
Mohamed of Mohamed’s Enterprise, Lombard Street, CIDI, General Equipment Guyana Ltd, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products and Courtney Benn Construction Company.
Action continues tomorrow with a triple header starting at 16:30hrs when Werk-en-Rust oppose Bourda and Lodge play Kuru Kururu. Kitty will also tackle Wales in the third match that evening. Then on Sunday there will be another triple header where Alberttown take on South Sophia, while Charlestown play Mocha. The final match will see West Ruimveldt Estate tangling with Grove.
Other playing dates are March 28, 29, 30, April 1, 4, 6, 10 and 13 when the final and third place playoff will be staged.
