Family members of 26-year-old, Ganesh Dheines, who was killed on the spot a month ago at
Met-en-Meerzorg, West Coast Demerara by an ambulance attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), is calling for justice for what they described as a “brutal killing.”
Dheines, also called Dankie of Lot 22 Uitvlugt, Sideline Dam was on February, 20, last, struck and killed by the GPHC’s ambulance while he and another friend were waiting for a bus to transport them home.
Yesterday, the mother of the deceased, Nadia, told Kaieteur News that one month has passed since her son, who was the family’s bread-winner, died and the perpetrator is “running around on cash bail.”
She added that after the accident, she tried contacting the driver of the ambulance on numerous occasions but he has been refusing to meet her.
“When my son died, the authority had me push around from one place to another. I had to borrow money to bury my son, the hospital ain’t give me anything,” the woman said.
Nadia, who has five remaining children, sells crush-ice to make her ends meet. She said that the driver of the ambulance was released two days after he was arrested and ever since then, she has been at a loss about what is happening with the matter involving the death of her son.
The mother, who says she feels “neglected” is asking the police and the higher authorities to provide her with answers.
At the time of the accident, the GPHC’s ambulance was transporting a Bartica accident victim to the Georgetown Hospital.
It is believed that Dheines, who was under the influence of alcohol, mistakenly took the proceeding vehicle for a bus, since it was dark and the ambulance siren was not working.
Dheines’ friend, who was at the scene, said that he (the victim) held out his hands but was eventually struck down.
He lamented when the driver of the ambulance exited the vehicle, he said “oh shoots, I thought it was a cow”.
Dheines was then rushed to the GPHC along with the Bartica patient but was pronounced dead on arrival.
