As play in the Junior Davis and Fed Cup continued in Santo Domingo, the Guyanese players who
have now acclimatised to the conditions and the hectic schedule have put in some improved performances despite losing their ties against Guatemala and Puerto Rico in the Boys Davis Cup and against Honduras and Dominican Republic in the Girls Fed Cup.
In the Girl’s Fed Cup, 14 year old Aretta Dey continued to acquit herself well as she was involved in the longest match of the tournament so far as she battled Lisa Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic for a marathon three hours and 5 minutes in an grueling encounter.
Dey took the first set in a tie-breaker which she won 9-7 against Gonzalez, but could not complete the win for Guyana as she lost the remaining two sets 6-2 6-1.
Her compatriot, Nicola Ramdyhan, who drew the opponent’s top player, has struggled so far in the tournament and has not been able to adapt to the high level of play exhibited by her opponents. Her opponent Paulina Penagos from Honduras was so dominant that she committed only three service errors in the entire match and hit winners from her forehand consistently to keep Ramdyhan out of the match.
After their team losses to Honduras and Dominican Republic, Guyana will next be up in the playoffs with Trinidad and Panama.
In the Under 16 Davis Cup, Gavin Lewis, who looked woefully out of his dept in his first round match, redeemed himself with a much improved performance as he extended the number one players from both Puerto Rico and Guatemala in the two ties played since.
Against Josue Galindo of Guatemala, Lewis could not capitalise on chances created to win games and got blanked 6-0 in the first set before he put up a fight in the second going down 6-4 in a match lasting 90 minutes. His score against Moises Landrau of Puerto Rico was 6-1 6-3.
His partner Daniel Lopes had a tough time in both of his singles matches but came back to play well with Lewis in their doubles match against Ian Amaya/Javier Castillo from Guatemala which they eventually lost 6-4 6-2.
Guyana will now participate in the 9th – 16th place playoffs in the boy’s category against Barbados, Jamaica, Aruba, Honduras, Curacao, Haiti and Guatemala as the tournament winds down to an end tomorrow.
