Joel Ali, a clerk who had claimed to have been abducted and robbed of a large quantity of cash entrusted to him by his employer, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday, charged with larceny of the money.
Ali, 25 of Lot 4 Riverview, West Bank Demerara and Sewsankar Geete, 23 of Lot 7 Public Road, Nooten Zuil, East Coast Demerara were granted bail in the sum of $300,000 each.
The alleged theft occurred on March 19 at South Road, Georgetown.
Police prosecutor Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question, the defendant Ali collected from his employer Ultra Nauth, $4M in cash and was supposed to deposit the sum at a bank located in the city. The police claimed that the duo allegedly conspired with each other to steal the sum of money. They said during investigations, the sum of $2,100,000 was reportedly recovered from the number two defendant, Geete.
The police did not object to bail but asked that stringent conditions be imposed on the defendants.
The men were represented by Defence Lawyer Sonya Parag who asked the court for reasonable bail for her clients. She related their particulars and claimed that her clients were not flight risks as the police did not have a hard time in locating them.
She said that her clients denied the allegation and since they had no previous convictions, they were willing to submit themselves to any conditions imposed by the court.
After securing bail, the two men were told to report to the Alberttown Police Station every Friday.
They were then sent to Magistrate Sueanna Lovell in Court Two where they were informed that their next court date is on April 2.
According to previous reports, Ali who was reportedly employed at ‘K&K Service Station’ located at Unity Village, East Coast Demerara had told police that he was abducted and robbed of $4M in cash and a $4M cheque.
The man had initially told police that he was driving his car along South Road when another car had reportedly rammed his vehicle.
The occupants of the vehicle he said came up to him while armed with guns and forced him back into his car, blind folded him, tied his limbs and took him to a undisclosed location.
He claimed that he was then assaulted and robbed of the valuables in his possession. He said the men drove off with his vehicle leaving him in the location.
According to the clerk, after some time he was able to free himself and then realized that he was on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway on the East Bank Demerara. He made a report to the nearest police station.
But police, in a statement on Wednesday last, said that Ali had reportedly changed his story.
