DEAR EDITOR,
We are indeed witnessing the strangest of times in Guyana – a time when exposing inefficiencies and corruption in government agencies, and expressing concerns for the non-accountability of taxpayers’ dollars, is deemed gross insubordination and indiscipline by the PPP/C government and its officials.
The PPP/C came to power under that popular Cheddi Jagan mantra of ‘a lean and clean government’, a mantra which, undoubtedly, captivated the interest of many Guyanese who believed in Jagan’s sentiments expressed in those words. But after 1992 these words remained just what they were put together to form a ‘mantra’.
The recent exchanges between Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, and Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, remind us that the PPP/C is either clearly opposed to democratic norms and practices or embraces a culture of ‘lackeyism’ where public servants and government employees are seen as captives or lackeys of the executive arm of the state, and as such they are expected to support the corruption and inefficiencies which abound within the government.
How else can you explain Rohee’s pronouncement that he ‘has lost confidence in Ramnarine’ – because the Assistant Commissioner made it known to the media that he did not receive the money which was said to have been provided for the divisions under his command, out of the G$90 million allocated for police services on Election Day (November 28th 2011).
This announcement made by the Assistant Commissioner seemed to have caused Mr. Rohee to get into a sufficient rage, that he rants all over the media to profess that Ramnarine is unprofessional, and indisciplined etc. In one of his latest outbursts, he calls for the officer to be disciplined. This latest call for action to be taken against Ramnarine, must have shocked the ‘gall’ out of every right-thinking Guyanese.
Is Rohee serious? Or is this Minister for internal security out to make a joke of the very serious issue of lack of accountability of millions of taxpayers’ dollars?
How can Rohee talk of losing confidence in Ramnarine, when he has virtually done no wrong, but is silent and comfortable with Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene’s conduct – when Greene, himself, essentially admitted to committing actions tantamount to bringing the entire Guyana Police Force into serious disrepute.
How can we justify Rohee’s attitude and call for Ramanrine to be disciplined when Henry Greene is given a free pass?
What we are witnessing is a shameless display of contradiction, bullyism, unfairness, cronyism, lackeyism, open double standards, and blatant disregard for the Guyanese people. For Rohee to even contemplate making the comments about ‘losing confidence’ in Ramnarine, when he ignores the gravity of Henry Greene’s issue, is a bold insult to the Guyanese people.
Further, Rohee is out of place for attempting to chide Ramnarine for bringing the people up to date with the status of their tax dollars. I urge all Guyanese to ensure that we do not let up in our call for there to be a full audit of the allocation of the 90 million dollars. Let the parliament debate and investigate this matter.
