The alleged murderer of Venezuela-based Guyanese Jose Ramalho (previously reported as Ramon Valenzuela) was yesterday remanded to jail after appearing before Magistrate Hazel Octive- Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Lawrence Semple was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder which he reportedly committed between March 10 and March 11 at Mabaruma, Region One.
After the prosecution requested that Semple be remanded, the court returned the man into the care of the state and transferred the matter to the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
Around 18:30 hrs on Saturday last, Ramalho was found dead on a playfield at the Settlement.
Kaieteur News was told that Ramalho was a businessman who travelled frequently to and from Venezuela and on his last visit had returned to Guyana with a quantity of raw gold.
Reports were that the man was last seen drinking with Semple, and was later found by a security guard on the playground.
Kaieteur News was told that police found no marks of violence on the body, but after a post mortem examination, the defendant was held in connection to the murder. He was initially held for questioning but was released.
Semple is said to be from the Mabaruma area and he will make his next court appearance on May 22.
