One of the two men who were shot in an apparent execution attempt in Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara on Saturday last, yesterday succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Giovanni Leitch, 21 called ‘Jo Jo’, who received several gunshot wounds to his upper body, and had to be placed on life support, died at around 06:00 hours yesterday, a short while after his relatives had visited. The family said that they were told that after they left, the man began to throw up blood and before doctors could take him to the operating room to check whether it was internal bleeding causing the reaction, the youth was dead.
Leitch and his friend, 22-year-old, Devon Agard, called ‘Chucky’, were shot by unknown assailants a short distance from the Plaisance Market. Eyewitnesses claimed that two men opened fire on the friends as they walked through a street not far from their home.
The man’s aunt said that her family members had spoken to Leitch a short while before his passing. She said that when her sister who would normally be the one to stay at the hospital supervising her nephew had visited, the young man had spoken to her. She said Leitch was previously on life support but that was removed because he had shown some improvement – being able to speak, and moreover, eat and breathe on his own.
Another relative said that Leitch had asked her for numerous things that she should bring on her next visit.
“He ask for bread, juice… everything he say I must bring when I coming back,” she said sobbing uncontrollably. The aunt said she was probably at the gate when she heard of the passing while the man’s mother, Emily Durant, said she had just arrived home from the hospital when she received the news.
Initial reports were that the man had reportedly snatched a woman’s chain resulting in the attackers’ retaliation. However Leitch’s family refuted those claims and the exact motive of the attack against the youngsters is still unknown.
Although, Agard and Leitch were both shot, all indications are that Leitch was the target. According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator shot Leitch, kicked him in the face and shot him again. The men were heading to the barber shop when the attack occurred relatives had said. Reports are that Leitch’s spine, intestines and liver were damaged while his friend was shot in the abdomen. He is recovering in the Male Surgical Ward and his condition is listed as stable.
After the shooting, the men had been placed under police protection, because it was feared that the perpetrators of the act were still bent on revenge, even showing up at the hospital making threats. Police are in receipt of a licence plate number of the car allegedly driven by those making threats.
Leitch was said to be gainfully employed as a mason, and was an active footballer. The man leaves to mourn three smaller siblings, his mother and father of Lot 49 Middle Street, Sparendaam.
