Leon Belony turned in a masterful performance where he amassed 5 points and
a positive spread of 473 to cart off the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged the Insurance Brokers Open Championship at the Maltenoes Sports Complex Thomaslands, Sunday morning last.
Ulric Harris made a welcome return to the podium after scoring a similar amount of points as Belony but a lower spread of 211, while Orlando Michael closed off the podium spots, also with 5 points but an even lower spread of 126.
Michael had had a poor showing in the last few tournaments and was demoted out of the top ten rankings. As such, he was grouped among the lower tiered players and was duly voted the best player in this category, receiving the special trophy at stake.
Belony dropped his third game to Moen Gafoor but secured victories over Ulric Harris, Orlando Michael, Julian Skeete, Maurice Munro and Ruby Cummings.
Fifteen players participated in the tournament marked by several upsets none more startling than the unexpected defeat of Moen Gafoor by Orlando Michael (9) and Ulric Harris (157) after he (Gafoor) had earlier chalked up four consecutive victories. Harris had an unfavourable start, conceding his inaugural game to Belony (121) before securing a bye in the second round. He redeemed himself with victories over Colin Chichester (389), Ruby Cummings (20), Delon Moffat (72) and Gafoor (157).
Michael’s victims were Colin Chichester (99), Moffat (9), Curtis Liverpool (23), Gafoor (102) and Maurice Munro (126). Company Secretary of the Insurance Brokers Limited, Ewart Adams, presented the prizes to the respective winners on behalf of his entity.
