Twenty-six year-old West Indies ‘A’ team left-hander Guyanese Assad Fudadin notched
up his second First-Class century as the four-day Regional First-Class cricket match between Guyana and host Trinidad and Tobago, who took first innings points, ended in a draw at a rainy Queens Park Oval in Port-of-Spain yesterday.
Guyana resumed the final day on 31-2 with Fudadin on 16 and Narsingh Deonarine on one and watched by a small crowd the pair played attractively to take the score 87 before Deonarine, enjoying a productive season with both bat and ball, top-edged Aniel Kanhai for Skipper Rayad Emrit to hold a good catch running back at mid-wicket.
Deonarine’s demise for 23 made way for the arrival of out-of favor West Indies right-hander Ramnaresh Sarwan and by Lunch the Guyanese had progressed to 137-3 as hopes of a T&T outright win drifted further away.
Fudadin who scored his maiden First-Class ton against CCC two matches ago in St Kitts, again looked composed and along with the stylish Sarwan, carried the South Americans to 175 before the 31-year-old Sarwan, when nine away from his 64th First-Class half-century, tried to go over cover and was taken by Emrit to gave pacer Shannon Gabriel his third wicket and first for the day.
Fudadin in his 47th First-Class match since making his debut in 2004 against Kenya for the West Indies ‘B’ team continued his wonderful season and soon became the first batsman with two tons this season as he and Skipper Shiv Chanderpaul batted the team from Carnival country out of the game under cloudy skies.
With the score on 195, Fudadin edged a ball that bounced from Emrit and was finally removed for a well compiled 108.
Chris Barnwell (6*) and Chanderpaul (14*) saw the Guyanese to 208-5 when rain stopped play and an early Tea was taken.
Even though the rain eventually subsided the Captains agreed to call off the game with no result possible.
With defending Champions Jamaica holding an unassailable lead in the competition and Guyana drawing a bye in the final round which commences on Friday, the battle is now on between Barbados, Guyana, Windward Islands and Trinidad & Tobago for home advantage for the semi-final round which starts on March 30.
Guyana are placed second on 40 points, behind Jamaica, while Barbados (36), T&T (34), the Windwards (28), CCC (16) and the Leewards (12) follow in that order in the points standing.
Scores in the drawn match: Guyana 290 and 208-5; T&T 349.
