Dear Editor,
I visited one of the ATM machines at the Camp Street Branch of Republic Bank(Guyana) Limited with the intention of withdrawing money from my account on the 27th January, 2012.To my surprise when I typed the amount I needed to withdraw, the machine churned a receipt which read ‘ insufficient funds ‘.I became confused, but quickly I decided to check another machine which churned a similar receipt. I decided to go into the bank to find out what was happening and the teller told me that I withdrew $30,000 on the 25th January.
I told her that I am unaware of such transaction. She referred me to a supervisor who, after approximately one hour came and told me that on July 27th, 2011, I went to the machine that was malfunctioning at the time and withdrew money but, my account was not debited.
I told her point blank that what she was saying to me was not making sense and after a while she came back and said, “I’m sending you to the person who took the money from your account. Ask for Raymond Sukhdeo at Water Street Branch.”
I reached the bank and asked the receptionist to see him and in a short while he came. I could not make any sense of what he was saying either. As a matter of fact, I felt as though I was attending an interview for a job. One question was about what I would do if I found money in my account that was not mine.In summary he was fishing for reasons for taking my hard- earned $30,000 from my account. Since then, I have met with three more bank officials in an effort to retrieve my $30000 but to no avail. To my surprise, the last official was more interested in the other place I visited that day (27th July, 2011) and what time I visited so he can coincide that with the bank’s time.
I requested to see the footage of what transpired on that day but, after he left to find how much it would cost me to see it, returned with the sad tale that it was erased. The truth is, I cannot recall visiting any ATM machine on that day and furthermore, since I have been using the services of an ATM, this is the first time I am hearing about one that gave out money while malfunctioning and forgetting to debit the account.
Poor machine! This is a real horror story and to think that it is emanating from a bank, a place where accountability should be the order of the day!
