A city businesswoman is counting her lucky stars for recovering her car minutes after it was stolen from her by two gun-toting bandits in a barefaced daylight robbery in the city.
Melody Mendonca, who operates an import business on Quamina Street, “Duty Free Guyana” which deals in fragrances and liquor, was held up just as she was about to enter her office by the two men who made off with her car, after they did not manage to relieve her of a significant amount of cash.
This is the second time in a year that Mendonca has been robbed in the same area and she believes that yesterday’s attackers were the same persons who had previously robbed her of a large amount of money.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, Mendonca said that she had driven into the driveway of her business around 10:30 hours and was about to open the gate when she saw a suspicious looking man approaching her.
“For some strange reason, I felt he was coming to me and sure enough he did,” Mendonca said.
She stated that she ran back into her car and secured all the windows and doors.
The man, Mendonca explained, came to the driver side of the car and motioned to her to open the door or wind down the window. Then she saw the gun in his hand.
“He started to hit on the glass and I said “no”. He became irate. I did not want to aggravate him so I opened the car,” Mendonca stated.
Pointing his gun at her, the man demanded her money and other valuables and waving his gun he actually pulled her from the car.
Meanwhile, another man who happened to be an accomplice entered the passenger side of the car, obviously in search of valuables.
Realizing that Mendonca had left her bag inside the car, the bandits made off with the vehicle which they subsequently abandoned in Delph Street, Campbellville.
When the car was eventually found, Mendonca discovered that the bandits had taken her passport, a camera, a pair of gold earrings and US$70 from her bag.
The men even ripped upholstery from the back seat of her Mitsubishi Galant.
The police were subsequently informed and they managed to lift several fingerprints from the stolen car before handing it back to the owner.
No one has so far been arrested
