With Alonzo Greaves not being in the competitive form recently, junior rider Paul DeNobrega will start as favourite to win the Third Stage of the annual Cheddi Jagan memorial road race set for the Cinderella County of Essequibo on Sunday, the 5th year the event is being held there.
DeNobrega, who won both the senior and junior categories in the second leg of the race held in the West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo, two Sundays ago will be aiming to finish in the top podium spot in the race which will pedal off from Supernaam at 09:00hrs proceed to Charity before turning back to end at Anna Regina.
As a matter of fact, it’s been the junior riders who have been dominating their senior counterparts quite a lot this year. Raynauth Jeffrey won the first leg of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial 3-stage in Berbice and he too will be gunning for another top place after settling for 4th overall in the West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo contest. Another junior, Raul Leal who finished behind Jeffrey, will also be in contention which makes Sunday’s contest exciting.
The senior riders however, cannot be overlooked with the likes of Robin Persaud who has had a good year to date along with Linden’s Orville Hinds, Eric Sankar, Junior Niles, Warren McKay, Walter Grant-Stuart, Rastaff O’Selmo and Jude Bentley.
Greaves won last year’s race in 2 Hours 13 Minutes 12 Seconds; DeNobrega took the junior category while Mark Spencer was the top veteran, Rickey Kissoon won the upright division, while Walter Isaacs was the top veteran and Naiomi Singh the number one female.
Veteran, upright and female cyclists will start at Anna Regina – proceed to Charity and return to Anna Regina to complete their distance.
Sunday’s event which is sponsored by El Dorado Trading along with S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services will see the first six finishers, three juniors, veterans and upright riders being rewarded.
The first two females and the first Over-60 competitor will also receive prizes with eight (8) prime prizes at stake during the course of the race.
Transportation for cyclists and officials to Shiraz Wharf, Parika, will leave 91 Middle Street at 05:00hrs on Sunday. Cyclists are reminded to wear their respective club jerseys or a white jersey.
