The 10th annual Pakaraima Mountain Safari was officially launched yesterday
by acting Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali, Managing Director of Rain Forest Tours, Frank Singh and Leonard Khan Castrol Brand Manager, during a media briefing at the Minister’s Office.
This highly anticipated event is slated to kick off on March 30 and run through April 6.
Minister Ali in his remarks noted that the event is one of the major ventures on the country’s tourism calendar.
“It started 10 years ago, mainly concentrating on our locals, because many of our people along the coast never had the opportunity to visit our interior where many believe various aspects of heaven reside.”
He stressed the fact that Guyana’s interior provides some of the most beautiful scenery and magnificent features on earth.
The event, Minister Ali opined, presents an excellent opportunity for understanding, exploring and falling in love with the country.
He further noted that over the past years the safari has grown considerably, given the fact that they have been able to attract regional and international participants who are eager to be a part of the experience.
“This year the organizers have a very difficult time in prioritising the number of interested persons because based on the logistics they cater for approximately 25 vehicles, and that is because of safety, logistics, time and so on.”
It was revealed that 35 persons with vehicles have expressed interest, but only 25 will be going on the safari. “This development is very good as it gives us the opportunity to revisit the organizing of the trip and to see how we can cater for the excess interest.”
Minister Ali also told the gathering that this year’s event will be dedicated to former Minister of Local Government Harripersaud Nokta, who spent most of his years ensuring the development of hinterland locations.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of Rain Forest Tours, Frank Singh, said that this year the safari will explore 14 Amerindian communities “where our guests will get a taste of our rich Amerindian culture and way of life”.
Singh said that as a requirement, each of the 25 participants will be required to make a contribution of their choice to the communities visited. He further pointed out that a medical team from the Ministry of Health will be joining the Safari as a part of their safety measures, and there will be a medical-evacuation team on standby.
According to Singh, on March 28 there will be an inspection of all the vehicles participating to ensure that they are off-road ready. The team will take off from the GuyOil Service Station at 1 am on March 30. There participants are to assemble on the evening of March 29. They will make five stops: the first one at Karasabai – where a memorial service for the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan will be held – Morabaiko, Monkey Mountain, Kato and then Orinduik, from where they will return.
Brand Manager for Castrol, Leonard Khan, noted that his company was pleased to be a part of the event as it represents an excellent marketing opportunity for his company.
This year’s safari is being sponsored by Digicel Guyana, Rain Forest Tours, the Government of Guyana, Guyoil, Guyana Tourism Authority, Neal and Massy Inc, MMC and Castrol.
On Saturday March 22, 2003, a Safari with four Land Rovers, two tractors and trailers with passengers started a historic two and a half day journey from Karasabai to Orinduik. The Safari was led by Mr. Harripersaud Nokta, other Government officials, along with the commander of the Lethem and Karasabai Police Station and twenty-one other persons. It was this journey which was the birth of the Safari.
