Dear Editor,
I am writing about pressing issues in the North West District, in particular, Mabaruma. The Government Information News Agency (GINA) published a release which speaks to very productive Hassar and Crab farms in the Tobago Hill and Aruka Mouth communities respectively. Why did GINA not publish photos of these very successful/productive projects? Forcing a press release down our ‘throats’ will not suffice.
Another very troubling matter is the Kumaka Waterfront, which is in urgent need of fixing. Every once in a while, we are fed a verbal concoction from the subject Minister on this project. A contractor was named and according to Minister Norman Whittaker, so too was an engineer, who according to him “is well known in the Region and has worked previously with the Regional Administration of Region 1”.
If this engineer is so well known, why is his name being withheld? Does the Guyana Forestry Commission know the engineer? Does a former Crime Chief know the engineer? Does the Police Department at Lethem know the engineer?
The status of the Waterfront works is just plain Waste of Funds. Nothing technical is being done to fix the problem. The area is being given an overdose of mud which makes its way into the Aruka River, leaving slush in its wake. If this is the description of the project, please let us know that we are sentenced to a muddy waterfront indefinitely.
