Approximately two weeks prior to his 8 rounds welterweight showdown with Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy, Mark Austin has dispatched a missive to his opponent warning him that “if he lapses then he collapses.”
The two will clash in an 8 rounds welterweight fight in the 21st edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza slated for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday March 30 next.
Austin made the above pronouncement, moments after wrapping up training sessions at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) Friday afternoon last. He has spent the greater part of the afternoon pounding away at the heavy bag under the tutelage of coach, George ‘Canchi’ Oprecht.
Already, Austin sports rippling abdominals and a well toned body. He declared that he is ready for combat while explaining that he had rested from sparring sessions on that day.
In place, Oprecht opted for pads work and a prolonged session on the heavy bag. “To date, my charge has completed 16 rounds of sparring with Edmond DeClou and before he wraps up training he will have completed a similar amount or even more depending on the number of sparring partners available,” hinted Oprecht.
He declared that he has absolutely no respect for Hardy’s punching power since ‘all of the boxers he has defeated are mere bums.’
Oprecht said that Hardy loves to fight at long range but develops problems with fighters that operate up close. “So I have instructed my fighter on the appropriate counter technique,” a confident Oprecht bragged.
Austin was also in a garrulous mood and warned his nemesis that he would suffer his first loss.
He said that he has never applied himself so diligently to his training and could not possibly envision a loss. “I am putting my all into this fight,” he said. It was when he was asked how he plans to win the bout that Austin had uttered the previous retort.
One of the major challenges Hardy faces seems to be the acquisition of competent sparring partners. Never-the-less, the man of the ‘Chin Check’ fame has conformed to conventional wisdom and converted his ‘lemons’ into a sweet brew, lemonade.
The lanky Hardy is still to taste defeat and has devastated most of his opponents on his way to compiling an impeccable 7-0 record. Six of his opponents were sent permanently to the canvass with only the indefatigable Troy Lewis surviving the onslaught.
Hardy has managed to woo a lot of supporters to his corner and they have been spoiled into expecting early finishes, placing their favourite boxer in an uncompromising position.
Hardy is quite cognizant of these expectations and has committed himself to work diligently to upkeep the tradition. Last Friday afternoon he was hard at work at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Boxing Gym and from all intentions is aiming to please his fans.
He boxed 8 hectic rounds between Jermaine King and Laured Stewart and indeed his condition appears to be coming in nicely.
Despite withholding the power shots, Hardy still managed to wear down his opponents and at the culmination of the session, appeared fresh as though he could have gone a few more. He wrapped up sessions with rigorous skipping and calisthenics.
Two other bouts will add to the excitement including the feature attraction between Mandessa Moses and Venezuelan Anys Cedillo.
These two was to have clashed last year but the promoters were forced to abort the fight after the Venezuelan had encountered problems during training sessions. Moses will be only too happy to resume her career after a lengthy hiatus due to reluctance of her opponents to face her.
Rudolph Fraser also returns to the ring for a return clash with Gardel Roberts after he had won the inaugural bout. The latter boxer has said that he has intensified preparations and has corrected some of his flaws that were responsible for the previous loss.
The Barbadian based Guyanese is spewing confidence and has promised to reverse his fortunes.
The various fighters will resume training at their respective gyms this morning and those desirous of assessing their progress are advised to arrive at the venues at around 10:00hrs when sessions start.
