Betters Butts’ 7-29 against Windwards 20 years ago
Twenty-eight year old out-of-favour West Indies left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine starred with the ball in Barbados with 7-26 with his off-spin to follow up his 84 with the bat in Guyana’s last Regional four-day cricket contest against the home team.
Deonarine collected the Man-of-the-Match award as Guyana whipped the Bajans by an innings and 66 runs to register their first four-day win against Barbados since their 2004 victory at Kensington Oval.
Deonarine’s destructive spell was only his second five-wicket haul in 91 First-Class matches since his debut in 1999 and was the best bowling figures in an innings in regional first class cricket since 1966 when the tournament first gained sponsorship as the Shell Shield competition.
Deonarine bettered the previous best figures by a Guyanese since 1966 which was Clyde Butt’s 7-29 in the first innings against the Windwards at the Mindoo Phillip Park February in the 1992 Red Stripe Cup Regional four-day game, which Guyana won by and innings and 41 runs. Butts’ previous best first-class bowling analysis was 7-56.
Overall since Guyana and Barbados competed in the inaugural Regional First Class match in 1865 at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados, Deonarine’s feat is the fourth best by a Guyanese.
The Berbician who has played eight Tests between 2005 and 2010 for his ability with the bat, is only bettered by the 9-19 by OH Layne against WC Shepherd’s XI at Bourda in Georgetown in 1909/10, the 8-58 by CR Browne against Barbados at Bourda in 1925/26 and the 7-13 by CR Browne against Barbados at Bourda in 1937/38 in the all time list of best bowling figures by a Guyanese in regional First Class cricket.
