New Amsterdam Prison Sports Department and the Hearts of Oak Masters
Football club recently staged a one-day football extravaganza which included a male and female five-a-side football competition juggling, penalty shootout with and with out the goalkeeper in Berbice recently at the All Saints Scott’s Church Ground, New Amsterdam Berbice.
Five teams participated in the male competition; Prisons A and B, Troopers, Prison Warders and New Amsterdam All Stars while on the distaff side four teams competed, Prisons A and B, Hearts of Oak and Berbice High School.
In the final of the male competition, Troopers defeated Prison B 4-0 with Delroy Ferdinand netting all the goals. In the female final, Hearts of Oak got the better of the Prisons A 1-0, Gwendolyn Schultz converting the winner.
In the individual competitions the respective winners were: best goal – Carlos Payne of New Amsterdam Prisons A; most goals trophy went to Delroy Ferdinand of Troopers; Derick Taylor of Berbice High School won the penalty shoot out with goalkeeper while Jamal Joseph of Troopers won the penalty shoot out with goalkeeper. Jamal Joseph also won the award for best goalkeeper on show.
In a feature 10/10 cricket match, Hearts of Oak Masters defeated Prisons by 16 runs. Hearts of Oak batted first and made 112 for 8 in their quota of overs. Prisons in reply made a spirited effort but fell short at 96 for 9 when their overs ran out.
Trophies and other incentives were presented to the respective winners. The coordinators were Neil Grizzly Humphrey, Nigel Felix and Officer in Charge of New Amsterdam Prisons Assistant Superintendent Kevin Pilgrim.
