The man accused of stabbing to death 41-year-old carpenter and father of three Abdool Ghandi, was yesterday remanded to jail after facing Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates‘ Court.
Kevin Ally of Lot 6-7 Water Street, first appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry where a charge of murder, committed on Ghandi was read. The alleged offence occurred on March 8.
Police Prosecutor Jairam Luckai reported that Ghandi was a carpenter and on the day in question he was working on a building located on Carmichael Street. He said that Ally was passing in the vicinity of Ghandi’s work place when he had a confrontation with some children who attempted to soak him. Luckai continued that Ghandi then approached the accused who was using expletives to the children. He intervened in the confrontation which caused Ally to become annoyed. The prosecutor said that Ally subsequently pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim.
Ghandi was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) but succumbed.
The Chief Magistrate remanded Ally and transferred the matter to Magistrate Latchman.
By the time the matter was sent to the other court, the family of the deceased was present. Ghandi’s wife Bibi Fazia Hussein was still visibly distraught.
Ghandi known as “Love,” of Lot 198, Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, was fatally stabbed when he reportedly intervened as a peacemaker in a fracas between Ally and some children who soaked him during the Phagwah Day celebrations. Ally reportedly objected and ended up in a verbal exchange with the children.
According to eyewitnesses, Ghandi who was nearby, intervened and Ally allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the carpenter to death. The suspect was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Ally is to return to court on April 16.
