President Donald Ramotar made an impassioned plea for citizens to honour local sports personalities regardless of the era of their achievement when he delivered the keynote address at the 2011 Sports Awards Ceremony where the cream of the nation’s sports personalities received their respective accolades at the National Cultural Centre last evening.
He lamented that this group is honoured during their glory days but are promptly forgotten shortly after their active years have expired. He further urged the executives of the various Associations/Federations to utilize such talent towards the development of contemporary sports people.
The head of state’s remarks followed closely on the heels of the acknowledgement of Guyana’s sole Olympics medalist, Michael Anthony Parris, whose 1980 bronze medal feat at the Moscow Olympics is still to be emulated much less eclipsed. “It would be a terrible thing if the achievements of these athletes should go abegging,” said Mr. Ramotar. He further acknowledged the fact that there are many athletes that have served the nation well and their input could be the catalyst to the achievements of contemporary stalwarts.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony feels that the sterling performances of local sports ambassadors had placed this country on an international pedestal and should not be ignored. He alluded to the power of sports to distinguish the identity of the nation even as it unites the various ethnic groups.
The Sports Minister closed with an admission that has often been uttered by critics. “Admittedly, these trophies are but a small token of the appreciation of a grateful nation and cannot be regarded as compensatory,” he reiterated.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar summed up those thoughts when he said, “These awards must not signal an end to your efforts but the beginning of an exciting journey.” Those receiving awards are, Person with Disability – Mr. Delroy Sookram and his runner-up Walter Grant Stuart. Sports Journalist – Photographer- Mr. Orlando Charles, Sports Journalist Non-Print – Avenash Ramzan, Sports Journalist (Print) – Edison Jefford, Most Improved Association – Guyana Chess Federation, Sports Association – Guyana Table Tennis Association, Female Sports Official – Ms. Cheryl Thompson, Sports Coach Mr. Hassan Mohamed, Sports Team – Guyana National Football Team “Golden Jaguars”, Runner-up Junior Sportswoman – Jevina Straker, Junior Sportsman – Imran Khan and Nigel Bryan, Junior Sportswoman – Priyanna Ramdhani, Runner-up Sportswoman – Trenace Lowe, Runner-up Sportsman – Randolph Morgan, Sportswoman – Dawn Mc Carnmon-Barker and the Sportsman of the year, Devendra Bishoo.
