DEAR EDITOR,
It is good that sections of the Parliamentary Opposition are demanding a credible explanation about the proposed Specialty Hospital.
This engagement is resembling an old PPP methodology, of believing that the People’s money is theirs to spend, or more specifically, to squander while enriching a select few.
Those of us old enough will remember the Del Conte Road scandal — the PPP seems to like roads), where millions were spent on a road never built. This was in the PPP’s earlier Administration between 1961 and 1964.
My several letters on this purported Specialty Hospital have been met with a deafening silence from the PPP hierarchy. The basic questions contained in my letters were among others:
1. Will it earn foreign exchange?
2. Will the staff be allowed to repatriate their earnings?
3. Will it be a drain on our hard currency?
4. Were the local hospitals and medical authorities in Guyana consulted to secure their involvement?
5. Will locals be trained / involved in this institution?
6. Is it aid or a joint venture; if so, who are the partners?
7. Will the fee structure allow the ordinary citizen to benefit from this hospital?
8. What are the specialties?
