Thomas United has suspended their52nd Anniversary Celebration Mash Challenge Cup and is calling on the Georgetown Football Association and the Guyana Football Federation to fix certain existing problems before they recommence the activity.
A Letter released by the club also cites certain perceived vindictive tendencies by the GFA aimed at railroading the Thomas United tournament, staging their Banks DIH League on the same days slated for play in the Challenge Cup. Kaieteur Sport publishes the full text of the letter:
“The Editor,
Certain things need to be made clear in regard to the state of football in general and the Thomas United FC 52nd Anniversary Celebration Mash Challenge Cup in particular. The impasse between GFF and GFA must be resolved forthwith in the High Courts of Guyana. The injunction filed by the GFA must be withdrawn; and the voting rights to the GFA must be reinstituted without delay.”
“For those of the GFA, especially its General Secretary, who fear being banned, the only option is either to ask the courts to lift the injunction on the day stipulated as the date of the holding of the AGM and elections so that the outgoing executive would have no authority to ban anyone; or sacrifice themselves like the warriors at Massada for the greater glory of football. In other words, FIFA has done what all the ‘weak hearts’ in various sub-associations feared to do, i.e gotten rid of Klass and Warner.”
“In the matter of TUFC tourney, on numerous occasions the GFA knowingly and wilfully publicised on the TV and radio that they were starting their Banks League on the very same day that Thomas had advertised their games at the very same venue, fully knowing that the GFC had already been booked and paid for by Thomas United.
Further, the GFA president, Mr Burnet, did all his best to prevent TUFC from borrowing and removing the substitute benches from Tucville ground to the GFC.
When confronted, he claimed he was out of the country and had no hand in these Machiavellian shenanigans and knew nothing of the countervailing advertisements.
Mr Burnet can now be proven, according to the president of Conquerors FC, to be a stranger to the truth.”
“At no time did TUFC wish to be a part of any controversy. We were merely hoping to celebrate our hallmark event. Some, with a lust for control and power, have sought to stymie us at every turn.
Some of our sponsors have become so bemused at this turn of events they have opted to be mere bystanders, and nothing more.
We have decided to surrender all our playing days and bookings of the venues to the GFA, all for peace and the love of the sport.
Messrs Mathias and Phillips are not without blame in these affairs, as their hands can be clearly seen in this mischief. May they prosper in life and their devious endeavours.”
“Our tournament is hereby suspended until this mess is sorted out, ‘One swallow does not a summer make.’”
Yours faithfully,
Oliver Hinckson.
