Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, has promised to soon engage organizations representing ‘differently-able’ persons to discuss the creation of a Paralympics organization in Guyana.
The Minister anticipates that by this year-end, relevant mechanisms would be in place to see the establishment of a Paralympics organization here. He made that pledge on Monday last, during Commonwealth Day celebrations at the National Cultural Centre, Georgetown. The event was hosted by the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities.
According to Dr. Anthony, the absence of a Paralympics movement in Guyana needs to be fixed. To facilitate this, a constitution needs to be established and ‘differently-able’ persons need to be involved in sports.
He added, “The organization created would be affiliated to organizations internationally, because when you finish the Olympics there is also a Paralympics and we need to have an official organization and that could represent us.”
Dr. Anthony related that the theme of the event “Connecting Cultures” is apt since there are 54 countries in Commonwealth with their own uniqueness and peculiarities. However, efforts are now being made to share cultures and garner a better understanding of humanity.
“In Guyana, the Commonwealth Youth Programme decided to use the opportunity to focus a lot of attention on persons who are ‘differently-able’ and again culture could play a role here because of the way we would have treated ‘differently able’ persons in our society they tend to have low self esteem,” he noted.
Dr. Anthony emphasized that exposing ‘differently-able’ persons to various cultures and sports empowers them since they are utilizing their skills.
