– historic invitational tournament looms
It was looming for quite sometime now, but on Saturday, the biggest active names in local table tennis will converge at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to compete in the inaugural Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Invitational Championships.
For the first time in the history of the sport, the invited players will compete for a total purse of $1.3 million in the one-day tournament. Notably, the sidelined Idi Lewis, Godfrey Munroe, Paul David and Christopher Franklin were not invited to participate.
The four players did not compete in the National Championships last year which could have been a reason for their exclusion from the list of invited players for an event that is expected to be filled with glitz, glamour and prestige at the renowned local indoor venue.
The impressive cash prizes are likely to force players to bring their ‘A’ game in a contest, which is expected to be one of the fiercest the sport has seen in recent history. The men were named to compete in a Super-16 Playoff, while the women feature six players.
There will also be pee-wee (pre-cadets and cadets) and Masters’ categories. The Masters’ contest features players in the 40-and-over; 45-and-over; 50-and-over and 55-and-over age groups and is expected to be played simultaneously for a packed day of keen rivalry.
In the Men Super-16 competition, the cash prizes will be $300,000 to the winner, $200,000 to the runner-up and $100,000 to the third place finisher. No other table tennis tournament has ever had such impressive individual prize monies in the history of the sport.
Meanwhile, in the Women Super-Six, the first place winner takes home $200,000 with the second place finisher getting $150,000 and $75,000 for third place. In the pee-wee group, the awards are $100,000 for the winner, $75,000 for the runner-up and $50,000 for third place.
The invited players are as follows:
Men’s Super-16: Nigel Bryan; Edinho Lewis; Paul Meusa; Joel Alleyne; Colin France; Warren Hackshaw;
Remmy Taitt; Devon Richmond; Denzel Hopkinson; Brad Belle; Brandon Belle; Gibran Safaraz; David Duncan, Stefan Corlette; Sunil Logan and Sachin Panday.
