Five years after escaping from police custody, Osmon Griffith, a man held for allegedly committing simple larceny in 2007 and had escaped during his incarceration, was yesterday back in the lock-ups.
This time he will have to defend himself against charges of escaping from lawful custody.
The matter was called before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.
The Chief Magistrate related to Griffith, that his charge imputes that while in lawful police custody on remand for simple larceny, he escaped.
The police prosecution reported that on May 11, 2007, the 35-year-old Sophia resident, was charged with simple larceny and remanded to the Camp Street prison.
On that day, the defendant was reportedly severely beaten by other inmates and as a result had to seek medical attention.
Griffith was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he escaped and had been on the run evading capture.
The incident was reported and an investigation launched but Griffith could not be located.
The Police further claimed that on March 10 last, while in Georgetown, the defendant was once again arrested and placed back in police custody.
Griffith was represented by Defence Counsel, Latchmie Rahamat.
She pleaded with the court to grant her client reasonable bail.
Rahamat said that her client is a contractor who is also the father of nine.
The Magistrate was initially hesitant to grant Griffith a pre-trial liberty as she was unsure of the outcome of simple larceny charge and as such the man was remanded to prison.
It was later determined that Griffith’s original charge was dismissed by former Magistrate, Gordon Gilhuys, after the prosecution was unable to provide adequate evidence.
Griffith was subsequently granted bail to the tune of $100,000 on the condition that he report to ranks of the Alberttown Police Station each Friday.
He was directed to appear before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, who provided March 16, as the date for Griffith to return to court on the escape charge.
