Vivian Harris’ return clash ends in stalemate as opponent sustains gash over eye
Former World Boxing Association (WBA) super/lightweight champion, ‘Vicious’ 
Vivian Harris’ attempt to rekindle his career suffered a minor setback after his opponent, former 2 times British champion, David Barnes, sustained a gash over his left eye following an accidental clash of heads in the fifth round, forcing a premature end to their welterweight bout at the De Vere Whites Hotel in Bolton Monday evening last.
A report from British writer, Dewi Powell at ringside intimated that Referee Michael Alexander had the bout 48-48 half way through the fifth round. Previous to the injury, the action hadn’t flowed as expected with neither Harris (146.2lbs) nor hometown Barnes (147lbs) taking the initiative.
Both pugilists used the early rounds to evaluate each other and the jabs were predominant. Harris then attempted to seize the initiative employing the straight right to thwart the advances of his southpaw opponent. Not to be outdone, Barnes flicked out his jab and feinted well to upset his opponent’s rhythm preventing him from lining up his shots.
The stand-off continued into the fourth round with Barnes’ lateral movement working well even as he parried Harris’ straight rights while effectively blocking the left hooks to the body. He was also landing a decent over-hand left as the fourth round closed.
The decisive round then saw both men simultaneously stepping in to throw punches but their heads preceded the punches opening a deep downwards cut over Barnes’ left eye. A brief doctor’s inspection was all it took for the fight to be abruptly ended. Harris’ record now stands at 29 fights 19KOs-7 losses 2 draws, while Barnes’ reads 25 fights, 11Kos, 2 losses, 2 draws.
