Third GT&T 10/10 nationwide softball cricket tourney…Exciting matches highlight first weekend play; E’bo’s Capoey Rising Stars into Super 16

The highly anticipated GT&T 10/10 nationwide softball cricket competition

bowled off last weekend at a number of venues around Guyana following a delay due to unusual rains.
The traditional bowl off took place at the Everest Cricket Club Ground in the Capital City following which matches were held in the three Counties of Guyana, Berbice, Essequibo and Demerara.
At Everest, some thrilling male and female matches were the order of the day with the first century being recorded by Regal X1’s Patrick Rooplall (104*), while there was also a nerve racking draw between Supreme Night Riders and FSN Tigers, the latter going on to win the battle following the super over. Both teams mustered 120 for 6 and 5 wickets respectively during their 10 overs each.
Regal XI, one of the four semifinal teams in last year’s tournament, on the back of Rooplall’s ton went on to brush aside Bravados in the competition’s first game, hammering their hapless opponents by a massive 156 runs.
Rooplall, who is based in the Cinderella County of Essequibo smashed a total of 16 sixes as he guided his side to an imposing 216-2; Bravados did not get the chance to ‘bad up’ as they were sent packing for 60.
In other results from the City, 2010 winner’s Trophy Stall defeated Everest ‘A’ by  90 runs to advance to the second round.
On the distaff side, Green Warriors, one of the teams to watch, won by a solitary run against Bounty Huntress, Fabulous Squad Reloaded also won following a super over against Dynamite Divas.
Solo Revellers a team made up of very fit athletes (Hockey players) won by the largest margin among the ladies, a resounding 93 run triumph.
The highest total of the weekend was recorded by Farm XI in the East Bank Demerara Zone; 245-2 in 10 overs against Unknown XI, Avinash Sookdeo hitting and even unbeaten century decorated with 11 sixes.
On the Lower East Coast, in the male category, Safraz Haniff of El Commandante slammed 103 off just 21 balls to pilot his team to the second round over Enterprise Stars.
Other East Coast results in the female division saw Buxton Shakers shaking off the challenge of Magic Crystal to hammer them by a cool 129 runs. On the West Coast of Demerara, home of defending champions, Wolf Warriors, the Warriors easily took care of business against Anna Catharina XI by 86 runs, booking their place in the next round.
Still on the West Demerara, the Leonora All Stars, made up of Under-15 players did not let age come in their way as they hammered their more elder opponents.

Up in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden, South Stars, Coomacka Mines – which qualified for the super 16 last year – along with the up and coming Hillfoot Strikers all progressed to the second round.
In the female category, All Star Conquerors (2011 super 16 qualifier) booked their second round place. On the West Bank Giant Killers, Invaderz and Speed Boat XI have also booked second round spots.
Up in the Ancient County of Berbice, Karibbee Boyz of Corentyne comprehensively defeated Travelers Cricket Club by 10 wickets with Khaimlalldass Khaimlall taking 2 wickets with his first 2 balls of the tournament.
Celebrity Times, losing 2011 finalists also advanced. In the female division, Karibee Strikers, one of the teams to watch, made up of some of the strongest female players in Berbice, easily made it through to the next round.
Upper and central Corentyne  Universal Solutions Tigers playing in the Central Zone won by the massive margin at Port Mourant.
In Essequibo – North Zone: Cottonfield Wild Oats were the biggest winners, thrashing their opponents Mainstay Gold Star by 121 runs. Their nemesis Affiance Storm were also in winners row recording a 34 run victory over Rakesh X1.
In South Essequibo, Adventure Sports Club won by a comprehensive 94 runs with Andy Dass clobbering 104 (9×6 4×4).
In the female category, Capoey Rising Stars showed why they are regarded as the best team in the Zone as they whipped all opponents on Saturday and Sunday to be the first Super 16 qualifier.
In the Pomeroon, Pomeroon Oil Mills made light work of  Die Hard Brothers who are the closest team in terms of quality of players, beating them by 35 runs. In the female category, Charity Emmerals have dominated again to be in the finals of that Zone which will be played on Saturday.
Meanwhile, some teams were disqualified because of fielding players who were not on their original lists submitted to the organisers. In one of the highlighted cases, Tameshwar played for Cullen Sports Club on Saturday and on Sunday took the field for Queenstown; his unsportsmanlike and dishonest actions resulted in Queenstown being disqualified from the tournament.
Additionally, the Guyana Softball League (GSL) is contemplating further action against the player for his unbecoming action which is deemed to be deliberate.
Players and teams are being warned against being involved in such dishonest acts which brings the game into disrepute.
In addition to the cricket, there were several novelty games for the fans who welcomed ‘Bluey Max’ the man in charge of the this aspect, with glee as they thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the giveaways that were presented by GT&T. Patrons and fans at the Everest Ground on Saturday and Sunday and those in Linden on Sunday all cashed in.
This week the teams move to Port Mourant in Berbice on Saturday and the Helena Ground on Sunday where fans are urged to converge in order to take advantage of the giveaways and promotion on the Blackberry phones that are on for this tournament.
