Fruta Conquerors FC defeated Santos FC 4-0 in a specially organized tournament dubbed ‘Coaches’ Goodwill U-17 Round Robin Knockout Tournament’ at the Tucville Community Centre Ground, Saturday afternoon last, while the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) emulated Fruta Conquerors with a 3-2 win over Flamingo FC. The action continued on Sunday March 11 when Camptown FC sent Black Pearl FC packing 3-2 moments before Northern Rangers and Rhythm Squad battled to a 2-2 draw.
The teams were engaged in ferocious battles in the tournament organized by coach of the Fruta Conquerors FC, Sampson Gilbert, who said that he was a mite peeved over the paucity of competitive action for his young charges. He elaborated on what prompted him to plan the tournament, “These youths are training intensely but the coaching staff is unable to truly assess their competence because of the lack of competitive activity so I thought it best to organize this tournament,” said Mr. Gilbert. He also said that he plans to have regular activity of this nature provided that he could encourage sponsorship from the business community. Matches would be played over the weekends only.
Currently, Oasis Water and Prudential Insurance have agreed to sponsor the tournament in part while Mr. Steve Ninvalle has promised to support the tournament. Mr. Gilbert said that he is grateful for such assistance as it would assist in organizing this and other tournaments of this nature.
Meanwhile, activities continue on Saturday 17 and Sunday March 18 next with four other interesting matches. On the first day, Renaissance FC tackles Rhythm Squad FC from 13:00hrs while Fruta Conquerors ‘A’ opposes Camptown FC from 15:00hrs. On Sunday, GFC takes on Black Pearl from 13:00hrs followed by Fruta and Northern Rangers from 15:00hrs.
Ten teams are involved in the competition including Black Pearl, Fruta and Fruta ‘A’, Santos, Renaissance, Northern Rangers, Rhythm Squad, Camptown and the Georgetown Football Club.
