National distance runner, Cleveland Thomas clocked 1:09:07secs and romped home first when the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, in conjunction with the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) staged the inaugural ‘Mexico/Guyana 20K Road Race from the village of Non Pariel ECD, to the Mexican Embassy Brickdam, Sunday morning last.
Kevin Bailey finished in the second place with a time of 1:12:54secs, while Dawud Shabazz clocked 1:13:57secs to seal off the third place. Winston Missigher finished fourth at 1:15:05secs.
Alika Morgan was the lone female participating and she clocked 1:23:11secs, while Llewellyn Gardener clocked 1:23mins and was the first runner in the Masters Male category to cross the line. He was followed by Errol Warde at 1:27:42secs with Silas Brummel (1:29:54secs) bringing up the rear.
The race was held on the occasion of the Mexican Athlete, José Luis Macías Luna’s visit to Guyana. The 59 years old Mexican is currently involved in the ‘Constancy and Resistance’ race which entails the compilation of daily jogging activity in order to eclipse a world record of 100,000 miles.
Mr. Macías has been running over a distance of 10K daily since May 1, 1989 and so far has accumulated 94,055 kilometers. He intends to reach the landmark by 2013.
To date, the Mexican has competed in Argentina, Columbia, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador and apart from accommodating his record breaking efforts, the just concluded event was used as the a reintroduction to long distance running in Guyana. The organizers have also agreed that the event would be an annual one and would be known as the Mexico-Guyana 20K Road Race.
Meanwhile, at the prize giving ceremony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon Frank Anthony, welcomed the reintroduction of the event after some twenty years and committed to its continuance on a monthly basis. He promised to coordinate his efforts with the Athletics Association of Guyana to achieve this goal.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was also at the finish line and congratulated Mr. Macías and the other participants. He further said that he was happy with the strides made in the area of sports in Guyana.
Mexican Ambassador-Designate to Guyana, Francisco Olguín expressed his gratitude to the Government of Guyana for co-hosting the event. He said that his government believes that Guyana has a great future in Sports, as well as several other fields. “Mexico wants to be part of that future,” concluded Mr. Olguín.
Several other important officials also attended the ceremony including Director of Sports, Neil Kumar, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King and President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce. Those athletes completing the race received medals of participation.
