Mere hours after a fire was put out in the engine room of the MV Lady Northcote, while it was approaching Port Georgetown, engineers were onboard the vessel assessing the damages.
Minister of Transport Robeson Benn told this publication that his engineers had been working on the vessel for most of yesterday. A report is expected to be submitted to him sometime later today which will then reveal the extent of the damages to the engine which had caught fire last Saturday.
At around 16:00 hours on Saturday, the Captain of the vessel was forced to contact officials at Port Georgetown for assistance to bring the vessel into the Transport and Harbours Department , Kingston Wharf, after fire broke out in the engine room.
Transport Minister Robeson Benn has said the fire was caused by a diesel leak.
“The vessel was entering Port Georgetown coming to the goods wharf and there was a leak of diesel from a faulty valve on an exhaust manifold that caught afire, burning the window of the pipes to the fuel tanks, and the entire engine room caught a fire,” the Minister explained.
Benn further stated that because of the leaking fuel on the one engine, the Captain was forced to stop the second engine, hence the need for the boat to be towed into Port Georgetown.
However, all 49 passengers and 13 crewmembers were safe and no injury was reported. A car which was on the deck on the vessel was slightly scorched.
Further it was noted that all of the passengers were fitted with life jackets as there was an adequate amount for everyone onboard. There was no need for passengers to evacuate the vessel onto the life boats.
