This year’s John Fernandes Insurance Services Second Division Hockey League got off to an exciting start with Western Union Hikers and Old Fort securing maximum points in their engagements against GCC and the National Ladies yesterday, at the GCC ground, Bourda.
In the opening fixture, Hikers with a number of junior nationals in their lineup survived some anxious moments, before pinching a narrow 3-2 win against the Bourda Blues with Aroydy Branford hitting in a brace in the 9th and 49th minutes, while Shaquelle Assanah’s 2nd minute strike had given them the lead initially.
Steven Xavier (48th) and Mark Sargeant (50th) efforts did make the game into a dogfight, before the final whistle sounded.
In the feature clash, the national Ladies continued their preparation to contest the Caribbean Cup qualifiers with a gritty performance against their male counterparts from Old Fort, but succumbed by a 2-0 margin with Onassis Fraser (34th) and Deon Carew (55th) minutes goals, the difference between the two teams.
The Ladies with national Coach Philip Fernandes in the central defence produced a gutsy display and the management must be satisfied with the team effort so early in the season.
Goalkeeper Alysa Xavier produced some heroics between the uprights to keep the margin of defeat slim, while Kerensa Fernandes, Ulrica Sutherland, Trisha Woodroffe and Marzena Fiedtkou, all had excellent performances.
Earlier, Manager of the sponsor Terence Solomon and Guyana Hockey Board President Philip Fernandes met the teams during the opening ceremony where the latter thanked the Company on behalf of the Board for its sustained support for the sport over the years.
The League continues next Saturday with another double header at the St. Stanislaus ground on Carifesta Avenue, commencing from 14:30 hrs.
In the first game, All Greys takes on St. Stanislaus College and that will be followed by the clash between Old Fort and Hikers at 16:00 hrs.
