The Linden Bauxite Company known as BOSAI Minerals Group Guyana Inc, through its General Manager Mr. George Zhoa and the Chairman of its Sports Committee Mr. Wainwright Bethune, recently announced that the company will make available at least US$10,000 ($2M) to promote sports in Linden.
And it has made contact with two major spectator sports associations, basketball and football, along with the Police Scouts and the Linden Table Tennis Committee for relevant budgets to assist these institutions.
Speaking on the decision by the Linden bauxite company, Mr. Wainwright Bethune indicated the interest by BOSAI, as he made it clear that other sports bodies can make a pitch for assistance, came since “…the management has decided to pump some money into sponsorship of sports. We know that football has been ailing for lack of sponsorship, maybe sports in general in Linden and we just looked at the larger spectator sport, football and basketball.”
Accord to him: “I have spoken to the football association, the basketball association, the Table Tennis Committee and the Police Scouts. What I am also doing is to encourage any other sporting body such like athletics if they can come forward we can come forward with a budget or a programme to see how we can assist with that.”
Only last Saturday night General Services won the inter department football competition and earlier this year they also came away winners of the basketball championship which indicates some level of commitment for sports within the industry by the bauxite firm.
These competitions have also served to garner interest among the families of employees and with this new development it should assist in better relations between BOSAI and the community.
At the same time with the Linden Town Week being staged as usual, the floodlights at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court has become a concern, since it means that planned events on the basketball court, particularly by the Linden Amateur Basketball Association could be seriously hampered, unless BOSAI makes its equipment available along with the Linmine Secretariat to rescue the poor lighting arrangements that obtains at the main basketball playing facility in the town.
However, if the necessary equipment and personnel are made available at this moment, with the Linden Town Week coming up, then the expected competitions of basketball and football being played simultaneously at times, becomes a distinct possibility.
If this does not happen then the calendar of events for this year’s Linden Town Week celebrations will be severely hampered for what is a major anniversary.
