Police were yesterday still scouring the Aruka River for the body of a 48-year-old fisherman, who is believed to have drowned on Saturday while taking a swim at Kumaka, Mabaruma.
There are conflicting reports as to how Ruben Yarde of Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, ended up in the river.
Yarde was a crew member of the fishing vessel ‘Lynnia’, which moored at the Kumaka wharf at around 12:30 hrs on Saturday.
According to one report, Yarde, who could not swim, entered the river with other crewmen to take a bath. However, the water was high at the time and the father of two was swept away by the strong current.
Sources said that the tide was ‘falling’ at the time, and on these occasions the current is extremely strong.
But another report indicated that Yarde and the other crewmen had been drinking and that he fell overboard.
Relatives of the missing man recorded an alleged eyewitness who claimed that no one attempted to rescue the fisherman when he was being dragged away by the tide. The alleged eyewitness had stated that the fisherman had taken ‘two shots’ of alcohol prior to the mishap.
One relative said that because he couldn’t swim, Yarde would normally bathe on the vessel.
“If you can’t swim, why would you go in the water to bathe, when you can use a bucket and dip water (from the river)?” the relative said.
Yarde is survived by two children, aged 28 and 24 and two grandchildren.
