The much anticipated third edition 10/10 nationwide softball competition bowled off yesterday at various venues across Guyana, but not before Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Alfred King bowled the ceremonial first delivery to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Guyana Telephony and Telegraphy Company (GT&T) Royston Rachpaul at the Everest Cricket Ground to signal the commencement of the country’s largest softball cricket tournament.
The knock-out competition is being played under the theme “It’s Our Game” attracted 116 female and 826 males’ teams this year. The tournament is being held in collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the Guyana Softball League (GSL).
At yesterday’s ceremonial opening King hailed the event as another massive mission which will lead to huge development in the sport. He said the Ministry was very proud to be part of the historic tournament once again.
The Permanent Secretary expressed his pleasure that GT&T has yet again put together another grand event noting that ever since its commencement, a rebirth of softball cricket can be recognized.
King also told the large gathering that included Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GT&T, Yog Mahadeo, that Guyana has a rich legacy, not only our diversity, but some sports we can call our own, and softball is one of them.
He said the Ministry is indeed proud in GT&T’s involvement in promoting sports, recognizing the strength of sports and of course the strength what it can do to bring our community and people together.
Meanwhile, Rachpaul, who was at the batting end of the ceremonial first ball, expressed gratitude to the Organising Committee for once again putting together the largest tournament in Guyana. He also expressed gratitude to the Sport Ministry and the GSL, along with the co- sponsors for their partnership.
According to the CFO, the tournament has grown to the extent that it has been touted as the best cricket tournament hosted in Guyana. He reiterated the company’s support to sports development and community involvement through such activities.
The competition, which will continue at various venues across the country on weekends, will culminate with the grand final at the Guyana National Stadium on May 12 with a Caribbean-style entertainment package.
Teams will be battling for over 30 Million in prizes and other incentives while fans will also cash in on the many giveaways (ipods, ipads, black berry phones, flat screen TV’s, free credit) apart from the grand prize of one Tacoma SUV.
