Dear Editor,
We write on an issue of grave concern regarding the behavior of the main opposition parties to the escalating cricketing crisis, and the unnecessary suffering being experienced by the players and cricket loving Guyanese.
At this crucial juncture of our cricketing woes, the opposition APNU has displayed an uncanny acrobatic reverse somersault on their previously stated position, while the AFC seems hell-bent on opposing the IMC merely because it was constituted by the Government.
One would expect that these two major parties would come out in support of the IMC’s noble intention to resolve the mess in which our national game has found itself, thereby putting an end to the corruption and the financial improprieties within the cricket’s administration.
To (seemingly) suggest, as the AFC has been saying, that the Chief Justice’s ruling, was just an opinion alarmed us.
An illegal GCB Executive had interpreted a decision as an opportunity for them to re-assume office, totally ignoring the fact that the Chief Justice stated clearly, that they, the illegal GCB, has no legal personality and could not be recognized by any court.
One would expect that such a pronouncement would be extremely persuasive to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, to take action. It is therefore unfair for the AFC to say that the Minister acted unlawfully because he accepted the Chief Justice’s ruling.
This is indeed shocking coming from the leader of the AFC, who is both a lawyer and President of a cricket club. Are they saying that the Chief Justice delivered an unlawful ruling?
Additionally, for the AFC leader to state that it was the same legal non-entity that saw the emergence of Clive Lloyd, seriously underscores his lack of understanding of the present state of affairs where pervasive lawlessness, disorder and financial improprieties dominate the landscape of Guyana’s cricket.
Certainly a legal non-entity could continue forever within an environment of accountability, order, decency and high moral behavior.
This, unfortunately, is not the case presently. Our view is that the combined opposition seems to feel that they must oppose everything the Government does even when it is right.
That attitude does not augur well for our cause as a nation, especially since the very opposition over time has been extremely vocal on issues of accountability and transparency, including free and fair elections.
It is apposite to note that over the past two years, the ICC, the WICB, the Guyana Olympic Association, APNU and the AFC have not made any comment, much less a condemnation or a request for an investigation, on the sordid affairs of the GCB.
Especially since the serious charges of executive lawlessness, financial irregularities and fraudulent elections were made by the majority of the GCB Executive Members and also the constituent members of the GCB.
The Government was the only body prepared to take any action while the others languished in their own comfort zones, apparently waiting to attack the Government for taking action.
Meanwhile, the GCB Directors cooperated with the WICB to withdraw from Guyana the 2012 Regional Matches (even though the illegal GCB was conveniently allowed to field a team) and the 2012 Australia Test Match. Not a word from our two opposition parties in the face of these unfortunate acts!
It is our view that the Opposition Parties have a responsibility to the nation by showing their unquestionable recognition and solidarity with the Guyana Government in the interest of our national pride and sovereignty when such issues arise.
Thank you.
Former GCB Executive
