Brian Singh appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday with tears in his eyes as
he related a story of a parent allegedly being taken advantage of by children who he said were hard to control.
Singh is the father of two teenage daughters who had recently appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson for attacking him with a broken bottle and a chopper because he had refused to let the 14-year-old daughter into his house when she returned home at 03:00 hrs the morning after the Popcaan/Tony Matterhorn show.
The teen had reportedly not been given permission to attend the show.
Yesterday he pleaded not guilty to two charges of threatening behaviour and a charge of threatening language, which he allegedly committed against his daughters.
Singh heard from Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry that he allegedly committed the offence on March 5 at North Sophia.
The police claimed that on the day in question, while allegedly in a drunken state, Singh came home and ordered his daughters out of his home. They said he subsequently began to put their belongings out of his house.
And according to the police report, the girls claimed that while leaving the home the father attacked the 14-year-old with a knife. They claimed that the father placed the knife to the girl’s throat and threatened to slit it.
The other teen told police that she became afraid and while she headed to make a report at the Prashad Nagar Police Station, her father attacked her with a hacksaw. She was reportedly rescued by members of a community policing group.
But a tearful Singh denied the claims. He said his daughters normally do as they pleased and when he objected to their behavior, it was as if he couldn’t speak in his own home.
Singh was subsequently placed on $30,000 bail. He was also placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the conclusion of his matter. He will return to court on March 14.
On February 28 the teens had faced the court after they attacked their father and subsequently armed themselves against him. They pleaded guilty to the offence of threatening language and assault but claimed that the father had provoked them.
The girls were discharged of the assault matter while the threatening language charge was dismissed. They were told by the Magistrate that such an offence would have a bad effect on their future. The Magistrate had let the girls go but not before giving them a stern talking to about the direction of their lives.
