What was supposed to be all fun and play, turned out deadly yesterday when a man who objected to partaking in the Phagwah Day activities stabbed another man to death in the city.
Dead is 41-year-old Nassair Ghani known as “Love” of Lot 198, Good Hope, East Coast Demerara. According to eyewitnesses, Ghani was fatally stabbed when he intervened as a peacemaker in row between the alleged suspect and some children.
Reports are that Ghani was at the time working on a building under construction next to the Bank of Nova Scotia on Carmichael Street when he witnessed a man pelting stones at some children who had bathed him with water.
Ghani and another worker approached the suspect in an attempt to pacify him, but the man allegedly whipped out a knife and stabbed Ghani several times to the upper part of his body. According to the witnesses, Ghani died before he could have reached the Woodlands Hospital, which is located opposite his worksite.
Mark Williams who was working on the same building as Ghani said he saw the man attack his co-worker, and then attempted to escape by running towards Lamaha Street. He said that he quickly came down from the building and pursued the suspect, who, upon meeting up with him, attacked him with the same knife and tried to stab him too.
Williams alleged that he knocked the knife from the man’s hand, but the suspect subsequently jumped into the nearby trench, hitting his head on a board. “By that time, people had already start to surround the trench, so he couldn’t run.” Williams continued.
Eventually the man emerged from the trench and was promptly collected and subsequently handed over to the police but not before he received a sound thrashing.
The suspects’ name was given as Kevin Ally of Lot 6-7 Water Street, Georgetown.
Ally claimed that he was attacked by the two men who had intervened in the row between him and the children.
He was taken to the hospital for medical attention for injuries he sustained on his hand and head.
Eyewitnesses maintained that the attack by Ally was uncalled for, since Ghani only sought to calm the man who was behaving in a threatening manner towards the children.
Ghani leaves to mourn his wife Bibi Fazia Hussein and their three children.
