Junior athletes from across Guyana will converge on the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, today for a colossal showdown aimed at churning out times that will ensure their selection on the 2012 CARIFTA Games team that will compete in Bermuda in April.
Interestingly, the day is expected to be a colourful one given the national celebration of a Festival of Colours, known as Phagwah today; one can only hope that the athletes’ performances brighten what has become the Georgetown Mecca of track and field.
From all indications, local athletes should be totally prepared for these trials after the extra days they had to fine-tune their preparations, following last week’s postponement, owed to inclement weather; however, there has been no such threats from nature since.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will commence the heated contests at 10am. It will serve as a two-fold activity with the association also hosting a Take-Away Lunch today, aimed at procuring funding for whatever team it selects for the CARIFTA Games.
Strong performances should be expected from a few seasoned, and outstanding, campaigners that include Stephan James, who made the CARIFTA 400m final last year, and every major final that he competed in internationally. He should easily qualify today.
In addition, Letitia Myles had an extraordinary year in 2011, establishing herself as the female to beat in the sprints at the junior level. She will be looking to dip under that 12-second barrier, and impress the AAG Selection Committee ahead for the Games.
Her opposing number Tiffany Carto should push her to the brink in the U-20 100m and 200m races; there should also be a big stir today when the 14-year-old sensation, Jevina Sampson, challenges for a spot on the team in the U-17 category.
The AAG qualifying time in the U-17 400m is 58.00, and Sampson has run one split second over that time 58.01 at the last development meet. Expect Sampson to qualify today in that race which will be a feature against 2011 CARIFTA participant, Melissa Byass.
In the middle distance and distance races, Andrea Foster and Nathaniel Giddings are likely to be among the standouts. However, the bottom-line is that Guyana’s youth and junior athletes will be going all out to ensure that their names are on the AAG shortlist.
