Two male constables of the Guyana Police Force are under close arrest at Eve Leary Police Station for allegedly demanding money ($56,000) from a Brazilian national on Tuesday night.
Constables Ross and Bernard, who are attached to the Alberttown and Brickdam Police Stations respectively, were positively identified by the alleged victim at the Alberttown Police Station when he went to make a report.
It is alleged that Ross, who is purportedly on sick leave, and Bernard dressed in their uniforms approached the victim at Cummings and Light Streets, Alberttown, around 22:30 hrs, and requested to see his passport.
Even though it was established that the Brazilian national’s passport was valid, the man alleged that the Constables demanded $10,000 but then snatched the rest of his money, which he claimed was $46,000. Utilizing a car which Ross reportedly rented from a businessman, the cops transported the man to the hotel where was staying.
A little later, when the victim arrived at the police station to make a report, he noticed that the car which had transported him earlier was parked outside, but was still surprised when he went inside to see the duo inside. Further inquiries led to the man positively identifying Constables Ross and Bernard as the perpetrators. According to a source, the car which the men used has been seized.
They are expected to appear in court tomorrow.
