Sasenarine Chand, also known Sugrim of Alliance, Essequibo Coast, remains a patient
at the Suddie Public Hospital, one day after he was severely chopped by two unknown bandits at the old Anna Regina market.
The 49-year-old guard is nursing chop wounds to both of his hands and head.
According to reports, on Sunday evening Chand was on one of the stalls when two men pounced and started to attack him with a cutlass. The guard did not recognise the men as they were both masked.
A report was lodged at the Anna Regina Police station and Chand was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital. Police have not yet made any arrest.
Meanwhile, Ucil Primo, a security guard attached at the Anna Regina Multilateral School was also attacked, tied up and severely beaten about his body by unknown bandits.
Primo, who worked as a security for the past 33-years, said he is not sure whether he would be venturing out back to work. The bandits gained entry through the back of the school’s compound.
Sunday’s robbery attack at the Anna Regina old market is the latest in a series of incidents of stalls being the target of thieves.
The Anna Regina Town Council is insisting that they have a problem of shortage of security guards. Vendors are also complaining about the unprofessional attitude of some security guards who they maintained are not properly trained. Many of them are not equipped with any form of protection.
Vendors are also lamenting the insecure state of the fences surrounding the market.
