Boxing team for T&T event
Experienced AIBA accredited Referee/Judge, James Beckles, will be in Guyana to conduct another Amateur Boxing Referees and Judges Course set for March 14 to 18 and is being hosted by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) at their facility at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym.
President of GABA Steve Ninvalle informed that the course is open to all referee/judges and persons interested in becoming same are free to register and be a part of the event. Registration is $2,000 and contact can be made with Terrence Poole (642-3785), Kesa Chase (627-1174 or 227-2645) or at the Sixhead Gym in Albouystown. Registration has started and will close on Monday March 12.
Ninvalle noted that the aim of the programme is to help improve the standard of referees and judges locally and also to bring them up to speed with several changes made to the rules of the sport internationally. The GABA head pointed out that in the past there has been refereeing and judging concerns during a few tournaments in the past and in addressing this aspect of the sport will help ensure minimal errors and boxers and fans will be more satisfied with the results of fights.
Beckles, who is no stranger here, having conducted courses here in the recent past, will arrive in Guyana on March 13.
Ninvalle expressed gratitude to King Solomon Enterprise and DeSinco Trading for their assistance in the staging of the course in difficult financial times.
Meanwhile, a team of seven boxers and four officials has been invited by the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Amateur Association to attend a tournament there, which is in preparation for the Olympic box off in Brazil. The Guyana team will leave on the 19th for the tournament. They are also like the Trinidadians preparing for the box off and road to London programme.
The Guyana squad is: Kevin Allicock (Jnr Flyweight), Richard Williamson (Flyweight), Imran Khan (Bantamweight), Steffon Gouveia (Light Weight), Laured Stewart (Welterweight), Eion Bancroft (Middleweight), Markember Pierre (Light Heavyweight); Coaches are: Carl Franklyn and James Walcott, Keith Campbell (Referee Judge) and Manager Dexter Patterson.
Imran Khan, who is in Wales involved in a special AIBA arranged high level training programme, will be home prior to their departure and would be keen to exhibit his skills learnt in Wales.
