Western Union, the money transfer entity with worldwide connections, continues to support the efforts of local sports persons and has collaborated with the executives of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) to renew a sponsorship deal for five young cricketers of Berbice.
The remittance agency donated cricket gears in excess of $300,000 towards the development of the group. Dubbed the ‘Junior Cricket Ambassador Programme,’ the initiative renders support to the selected cricketers for the fiscal year. The lucky players are Shawn Perreira, Kumar Madray and Phaffiana Millington of RHTY&SC, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai of Albion and Linden Austin of Young Warriors.
The gesture is in collaboration with the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and marks the fourth successive year the money transfer company has extended such chivalry to cricketers in the region.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC, Hilbert Foster, received the gift on behalf of the cricketers and expressed delight that Western Union has once again seen it fit to support the youngsters. He admitted that such chivalry has significantly benefited cricket in the county. “Western Union’s investment into the careers of these players has assisted greatly in their development, supported the objectives of the RHTY&SC and those of the Berbice Cricket Board thus enabling them to lift the game higher,” Foster remarked.
Marketing Manager of Western Union, Natheeah King-Mendonca reminded that the initiative had its genesis in 2009 with an aim of assisting the young cricketers in the area. She said her company is pleased with the returns as the players have progressed remarkably over the years.
“As observed by Mr. Foster, there is growth and development among the cricketers and we’re assured that we’re investing wisely,” exhorted Ms King. She further said her organization would not be compelled to invest in young people devoid of such returns. She then urged the recipients to demonstrate commitment and discipline in their every endeavour.
“Character is defined by choices and discipline is a key variable; if these traits are absent nothing could be accomplished,” she reiterated. The Marketing Manager pointed out that Western Union has committed to the support of the youngsters and in return expect the players to demonstrate commitment and discipline towards positive results.
Lewis, Motie-Kanhai and Austin have represented Berbice and Guyana at the Under-19 level, while Motie-Kanhai had clinched the captaincy position as an U-17 player. Perreira successfully captained Berbice at the Under-19 level and also made his senior Inter-county debut at age 16 while Madray continues to successfully represent the RHTY&SC at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
Millington, the club-mate of West Indies senior women player, Shemaine Campbelle, made her senior national debut at the tender age of 13, and the club is confident the young lady will follow in the footsteps of her colleague. She has expressed such desires and her aspirations are supported by her club mates who feel that the investment garnered from Western Union will assist her towards that goal.
