launched yesterday at the Windjammer International Hotel, Queen Street, Kitty.
On hand to share details on what would be an expanded competition this year was Chairman of the HRC Committee, Hugh Arlington Ross, Guyana’s most decorated bodybuilder at the highest level.
The 2010 winner of the Mr. Universe Over-40 category stated that this year the HRC will be expanded to accommodate four (4) Sub-Meets around Guyana which will see the top athletes in the various categories earning a place in the HRC finals which is set for the National Cultural Centre (NCC) on Saturday July 28, 2012.
Ross informed that the four male categories to be contested at the Sub-Meets and Finals are Bantamweight, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight, while the females will contest the Figure Competition.
“In this edition of the competition we are aiming to expand the level and popularity of the competition all with the aim of the further development of the sport in Guyana. It is our intention to ensure that athletes are better prepared for the finals hence the Sub-Meets. We intend to work with them very closely and ultimately, they will be getting more exposure that will serve them in good stead when they are selected to represent Guyana at the Caribbean and International levels.”
Sub-Meets will be held at least six weeks before the finals and the areas identified are Berbice, Georgetown, West Demerara/East Bank and Linden. It was also reported that the HRC Committee is working towards having a male and a female guest poser for the finals.
President of the Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation (GABBFF) Keavon Bess who shared yesterday’s launch also, in brief remarks informed that the federation was solidly behind the staging of the HRC, which is in its third year, noting that the Classic has been doing its bit towards the development of the sport.
“The HRC we believe will help to further develop the sport and we at the GABBFF are fully behind its staging. We would like to see it being held on a yearly basis since it will help to expand the sport.”
The Committee is still working on the prize package that will be available to the top performers but Ross noted that athletes placing first to fifth will be rewarded as is the norm. Incentives will include gift certificates.
The other members of the HRC are Dexter Garnett (Sponsorship & Finance), Andre Poonai (Technical Coordinator), Alison Yhap (Secretary/Treasurer), Franklin Wilson (Public Relations & Marketing) while the Athletes Coordinator will be named shortly.
Meanwhile, the inaugural winner of the HRC was Mark ‘Uno’ Perry in 2008 with Royston Booker taking the 2010 overall crown. Ms. Alisha Fortune won the Ms. Body Fitness Crown at both editions.
