Three men were arrested after attacking miners, including the Guyanese-Canadian
dredge owner at an interior mining camp known as “Frenchman.”
Last Thursday, Antonio Lynch and other six others were at the camp when armed men approached the camp on motorcycles and a Land Cruiser demanding to see the owner.
Lynch, who was badly beaten, told the men that the owner had left to go to a nearby shop. They dragged him into their vehicle and set about to locate the owner, Simon Low-a-Chee.
The men encountered the owner on his way back to the camp.
“They jump out and start firing blows,” Low-a-Chee told Kaieteur News yesterday, displaying the marks of violence still evident about his body, mainly his left eye.
The men escaped with two of Low-a-Chee’s phones, an ounce of gold and his firearm.
He informed the warden of the area, who advised him to report the matter to the Mabura Police Station.
Low-a-Chee said that the Police reacted promptly and together with help from the Linden Police Station, three of the men were apprehended and the stolen items recovered. The miner said that the only thing missing were four rounds of ammunition.
Low-a-Chee said that he is convinced that the attack was set up by another miner whom he named.
He was high in praise for the response of Mabura Police, particularly the Sergeant, as well as the Officer in Charge of the Linden Police Station.
