The Georgetown teams could expect stiff competition from the East Bank and West Demerara sides
when the Mayor’s Cup annual Knock-Out Inter Ward Football tournament kicks off on March 23 with a double header at the GFC ground.
Plenty of action is anticipated as the teams battle for the half of a million Guyana dollars first prize. Tiger Bay face Den Amstel from 18:30hrs in the opening game before West Ruimveldt oppose Pouderoyne from 20:30 hours in the next match.
The final is set for GFC on April 6 and losing finalist will collect $250,000, while the third placed team gets $150,000 and the loser of the third place play-off receives $100,000.
West Demerara teams Stewartville, Wales, Den Amstel and Pouderoyen and East Bank sides Grove, Mocha and Kuru-Kururu will be keen to upset the city sides in the tournament which is coordinated by former national football coach and player Lennox Arthur.
All 20 matches in the competition will be played at GFC with the semi-finals fixed for April 4 after the Quarterfinals are contested on All Fools Day (April 1).
On Marc h 24 Alexander Village face off with South Sophia from 16:30hrs, Kitty and Mocha do battle from 18:30hrs and Wortmanville and Alberttown play each other from 20:30hrs.
On March 25, North Sophia play Charlestown from 16:30hrs, West Ruimveldt Estate take on Stewartville from 18:30hrs and North East La Penitence oppose Wales from 20:30hrs.
On March 27, Kingston play Grove from 18:30 hrs and Campbellville and Kuru-Kururu do battle from 20:30 hrs. Arthur disclosed that he is still seeking sponsorship for the tournament to cover all the expenses so far and is appealing to sponsors, those approached and others, to come on board and assist the successful running of the tournament which brings together top club and other fringe players in what has become a competitive tournament.
Among some of the high profile players expected to be on show include Anthony Abrams of Wortmanville, Shem Porter of Alexander Village, Devon Millington of North East La Penitence, Quincy Madramootoo of Kingston, Shemroy Arthur of Tiger Bay and Nedd Fraser of West Ruimveldt.
