…committed to High Court for attempted murder
Ex- Presidential guard Malvin Taylor on Friday last had the charge of discharging a firearm
dismissed against him but he was committed to stand trial in the High Court on the charge of attempted murder.
Last year February Taylor was arraigned on two charges of attempted murder committed against his wife Sharon Taylor, 30, and her sister, Michelle Edwards, 19. He was also charged with discharging a loaded firearm at Aubrey Smith who was in the company of Taylor’s wife at the time.
The police said that on January 26, Taylor allegedly intended to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm to Mrs. Taylor, Edwards and Smith.
During the one-year long preliminary inquiry (PI), at least nine witnesses testified for the prosecution with at least six of those being police officers.
Prior to the ruling of Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry two of the virtual complaints presented their evidence-in-chief led by police prosecutor Inspector Steven Telford. Mrs. Taylor and her sister gave their evidence leading up to the alleged incident and what had occurred during the alleged altercation.
Before this, Smith who is the third victim in the matter had given his testimony, being led by Telford. Taylor’s lawyer, Defence Attorney Nigel Hughes had also cross- examined the witnesses.
On Friday the court ruled that Taylor would stand trial at the next appropriate seating of the High Court. The other charge was dismissed after Telford had indicated the instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions that there was inadequate evidence to hold the charge of discharging a loaded firearm against the accused.
The police alleged that on the day in question Taylor saw his wife and his sister-in-law speaking with Smith and an argument ensued. The court was told that Taylor pulled out his gun and opened fire at them. Mrs. Taylor and her sister sustained injuries and were reportedly rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by public spirited persons while Taylor allegedly escaped. The man turned himself into the police after several days with his lawyer.
According to reports the altercation stemmed from Taylor’s wife allegedly having an affair with Smith.
