For the sixth time since the year began, the Customs Anti- Narcotics Unit (CANU) has been able to get another conviction, this time against a father of four, who on Friday, admitted to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry to having 2.176 kilograms of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Nigel Anthony Permaul, 30, of 168 Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment along with a $30,000 fine for trying to exit the country with the illicit substance.
According to CANU prosecutor Oswald Massiah, on March 1, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Permaul intended to board a flight destined for St. Kitts via Barbados. The man’s luggage was scanned by CANU ranks and they noticed some strange objects in the bottom of the bag.
Permaul was called to verify that the bag was his and produced documents confirming his claim. When the drug ranks punctured the bottom of the suitcase a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine, poured out.
After the substance was showed to him, Massiah said that Permaul admitted to the substance being cocaine and alleged that he was given the drugs by someone whom he only knew by an alias.
The drugs were completely extracted and weighed in the presence of the defendant.
In court, Permaul claimed that he was not finding work and that he has three children, another on the way and his mother to take care of. He begged the court for leniency.
The magistrate commented on the prevalence and seriousness of the offence and related that a strong message should be sent to the offender and others contemplating the offence.
