Chinese Grand Master Lu Ming began a three month training course with the City Police Friday at the City Constabulary Training Centre on Water Street after conducting a similar course with the Guyana Defence Force.
Ming, who has been in Guyana for the last eight months through the Chinese Government and attached to Guyana’s Ministry of Education, told Kaieteur Sport that he was given permission to work with the soldiers and now the City Police, adding that he was pleased with the sessions with the GDF, especially their athletes.
Ming specializes in Kung Fu training and hand to hand combat and his stint with the City Police, which will be held every Wednesday and Friday for the next three months, is being sponsored by Canadian based 7 Oceanz Medical headed by Raj Ovellet. Derbe Fraser is the Guyana branch Manager and said that plans are in place for huge technological improvements in Guyana’s Health Care.
Deputy Chief Constable of the City Police, Trevor Merriman, said the Lawmen are very grateful for the assistance from Ming since he feels it would help to enforce law and order without the use of lethal weapons.
“The City Police is keen to deal with criminal elements in the Capitol without using lethal weapons as much as possible, Ming’s training will teach us how to better do that and greatly assist in our hand to hand combat skills,” Merriman explained.
The sessions will begin at 15:00hrs on Wednesdays and 14:00hrs on Fridays and each session will last for two hours and is initially expected to begin with 20 persons of both sexes.
Ovellet explained that the first month will be used for evaluation of the training and said he was pleased that his company could assist in improving crime fighting in Georgetown.
