The text books scam is an assault against Guyana’s children

Dear Editor,
This seems to be the year of revelation. The PPP/C has outfoxed itself and now faces a new reality. Within the last few weeks a number of corrupt deals have been unearthed. The intention of this letter is to focus on the text book scam.
The PPP/C robbed the children of this country when they stole millions of dollars and tied it up in a ‘nasty deal’ by paying out taxpayers’ dollars to their friends to print outdated books for the children of this country to use.
It becomes a highly poignant, bloodcurdling and disgraceful situation to witness a government stealing from its own children, and jeopardizing the success of these children by deliberately handing them obsolete or outmoded tools to work with.
Simply put, the Ministry of Education is setting up the nation’s children to fail – millions of taxpayers’ dollars corruptly tied up in the printing of outdated books, which will do our children no good.  This is callous to say the least; do the children of ordinary Guyanese deserve this kind of assault on their education and their chances to achieve high academic heights? Of course not!
We know that many of those who attend public schools have to rely on text books provided by the school since their parents’ meagre wages or salaries cannot buy all the books they need.
Yes, this ‘thieving’ by the government from the working class families of this country is worrisome and should not be taken lightly, as we will be aiding in jeopardizing the future of our children.
It is important that an urgent inquiry be launched into this textbook scam to ascertain whether the books printed are in use by schools and for how long. Investigators must also take care to assess how the use of these books, by students, would have affected or stymied their performance.
The gravity of this situation must be accurately estimated and all responsible must be made to answer.
I call on the 10th Parliament to view this matter seriously and have a full house debate on it with a view to advancing appropriate recommendations to deal with same.
This matter goes to the core of our values and ethics as a nation and places a burden on our leaders to take action to ensure that the welfare of our children is always protected and is always paramount.
