Social Workers providing an invaluable contribution to Guyana are being forced to work
under harsh conditions at the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Leaking ceilings, sagging floor, exposure to construction works, and absence of privacy are among the challenges Social Workers have been facing for in excess of one year.
Construction at the Ministry to improve working conditions to the Probation and Social Services Departments commenced over a year ago. However, the journey to that destination is causing severe discomfort for employees and members of the public.
Those departments are client oriented with the Social Services division focused on pension and public assistance whilst the Probation unit helps families and individuals.
These services are provided by 15 employees who perform their duties despite the inconveniences.
Yesterday’s heavy downpour around Georgetown disrupted their cramped uncomfortable working environment as water flashed in from windows and leaked through the ceiling.
Four Social Workers, who operate in the boardroom, were displaced as their tables and boxes of files were soaked and water dripped incessantly.
The lobby was transformed into their office space as they dealt with clients in the full view of members of the public.
However, on a dry day, they are randomly displaced as they search for a private room to deal with sensitive issues clients prefer to discuss confidentially.
This proved to be a tiresome task as they had to negotiate with their other colleagues who were fortunate to have private rooms.
Previously there were no private rooms.
Social Workers were required to execute their duties effectively in a small section of the building whilst carpenters utilized various construction tools and shouted profanities.
However, when the inconveniences were raised management decided that staff would utilize the four ‘newly’ completed rooms and the boardroom. This decision was taken about five months ago.
